SOFT SPECTRUM
There is a performance we all put on when the spotlight is on us, either physically or in a metaphorical sense. For men this performance is a well-rehearsed display to ensure we are perceived in the way that is socially 'masculine'. It isn't uncommon for most or some men to be afraid to show softness in fear or looking feminine or queer.
Research has shown through a network analysis approach conducted via an online survey, that men believe women see them as "hardworking, strong, insensitive and chauvinists" and there is cultural pressure to uphold these stereotypes.
Despite not identifying or presenting as feminine myself, I've found it's fun to dip my toe into the world of embracing my 'softer' side. Once I started experimenting within the world of infrared photography, I knew straight away there could be potential in sharing these experiences I've enjoyed in my own vision.
This portrait series explores an unseen world where men within my generation can be proud to show that we are a generation that is coming to terms with the idea that it’s okay to wear pink, it’s okay to be a little extravagant, it’s okay to wear pretty flowers.
